A morbid longing for the picturesque

A video essay that dives deep into behind the scenes of illustrating ‘The Secret History’: It explains my creative process and the extensive research I undertook before I began illustrating; it sheds light on the challenges I faced throughout the process and zooms in on my complicated relationship with AI and it's role in the creative process.

Dreams
This work explores the relationship between dreams and reality, between our perception of what our life should look like and the way it actually does.
While making this short film, I was deeply inspired by the rise of the Dark Academia movement during the pandemic: the aesthetic gathered an immense following online, clearly showing that students felt like they were missing out on vital experiences by being confined to their homes during 2020. The movement was born as more and more people romanticised the idea of learning, of old libraries and elite societies.
This project was created as a university assignment. The brief asked that students pick a piece of sound and then visualise it in a moving image. My choice was 'The Secret History’ from Kerrey Muzzey’s album 'The Architect’ which epitomises the dark academia movement to me.
A little journey to the land of better understanding

This video was put together in one night. Also titled Mystery Brief, this project was part of my curriculum at CSVPA. None of the students knew what was coming. We were sorted into groups and told that we need to form a band – and produce a title track, an album cover, studio pictures, a zine, social media accounts and a live performance – within a week. The only rule was that it needed to be experimental and inspired by Creative Credo by Paul Klee. With no prior musical experience, we embarked on an adventure that pushed all of us to our breaking points.
Grimm fairytales

In 2023 I had the honour to participate at an exhibition “Close to Ideal” hosted by Ola Foundation in Riga. My work was exhibited alongside 28 of the most renowned Latvian artists.
The theme of the exhibition centred around our ideas of the ideal - especially what it means to be the perfect woman in the 21st century. I created a series of four illustrations specifically for this exhibition. All of them featured a fairytale heroine - Snow White, Red Riding-Hood, The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty. I envisioned what would happen if these heroines broke under the pressure of having to be perfect all the time. What if they got absolutely sick of it?
These videos are both timelapses of my creative process and a deep-dive into the concept of my work.
